Having a deck is great because you can use the space for multiple functions. You can host parties and family get-togethers or just bask in the sun in your outdoor space. One of the most popular deck materials today is cedar. While it naturally resists rot, fungi and insects, it does need regular maintenance.
Here are some tips for keeping your cedar siding beautiful and prolonging its life from an exterior painting expert.
Cleaning
Cedar may resist moisture up to a point, but any moisture on wood can encourage decomposition. Depending on how dirty your deck gets, clean it once every one to three weeks. Most times, a good sweeping should do the trick, removing plant debris and dirt from the deck???s surface. It???s not recommended to use a stiff-bristled brush because they can create grooves in which dirt and water will build up, leading to rot.
Washing
You should wash your deck at least once a year in the spring, as well as before staining. Many outdoor living spaces are utilized for cooking and barbecuing. Get rid of any grease or spills before they can settle into the grain and affect the quality and color of the wood. Only use cleaning materials specified by the manufacturer to prevent voiding your warranty. Residential painting contractors discourage using abrasive solutions such as liquid bleach.
Sanding & Staining
Sanding is necessary to prepare your deck for staining. If this is something you’ve never done before, it???s best to let a professional handle the sanding and staining for you. After cleaning and washing your deck, your contractor will apply medium-grit sandpaper to the deck???s surface. They’ll either use a power sander or sand the surface by hand.
Your contractor will wait for your deck to be dry for at least 24 hours before staining. You can go for either an oil-based or a water-based stain. Oil-based stains usually last longer, but water-based ones are better for the environment since they have fewer toxins.
